Recent Highlights from GDC/South Africa

Thanks to support from Mediteam Trust, GDC/South Africa is working to expand the availability of mifepristone-misoprostol medical abortion in the public sector. Our current focus is on the Mpumalanga province.

  • GDC/South Africa’s project targets three groups of health care professionals that provide reproductive health care services: maternal, child and women’s health coordinators (MCWH); public hospital doctors and reproductive health nurses; and South African Medical Association (SAMA) physicians and general practitioners. Members of these groups are ideally placed to advocate for the expansion the availability of medical abortion because:
    • MCWH coordinators design and oversee women’s health services in the public sectors.
    • The doctor-nurse teams are decision makers for clinical services and responsible for implementation in their respective hospitals.
    • The SAMA members not only provide clinical services but are instrumental in forging local medical society policy.
  • Over the course of 2015-2016, GDC will engage trainees from these three groups in the Mpumalanga province in a series of advocacy trainings specific to the expansion of the availability of medical abortion, and will help them to work together to complement each other’s efforts in a coordinated campaign.
  • In July of 2015, GDC/South Africa held a meeting of its Advisory Committee to finalize an action plan for the project.
